Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during a recent tour.
